About this place
Bukcheon Mission Station is a Catholic mission station of the Diocese of Masan and serves as a small faith community for Catholics in Bukcheon-myeon, Hadong-gun. The current Catholic directory lists Bukcheon as a mission station of the diocese, and an official diocesan account of Jingyo Parish identifies it as one of the mission communities under that parish’s pastoral care.
In the rural areas of Hadong, the population is widely dispersed and distance from the parish church can create a practical burden for Catholic life. In this setting, Bukcheon provides a nearby place where believers can meet for prayer and sustain community ties. The Diocese of Masan, when describing Jingyo Parish, also notes the population decline affecting its mission stations, including Bukcheon. This gives the mission station a meaning beyond that of a small facility: it helps preserve the local presence of the Church amid aging and demographic decline.
History & origins
The establishment of Bukcheon Mission Station is documented in the history of Bonggok-dong Parish. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that, as Bonggok-dong expanded its pastoral outreach into western Jinju and nearby rural areas, it established Bukcheon Mission Station in Bukcheon-myeon, Hadong-gun, together with Gonyang Mission Station in November 1987. This represented an effort to create a local Catholic community for believers living far from the parish church.
The pastoral jurisdiction changed only a few years later. When Jingyo Parish was established in Hadong-gun, Bukcheon and Gonyang were transferred from Bonggok-dong Parish to Jingyo Parish on June 20, 1990. The reorganization placed the mission station under a parish closer to its local living area and marked Bukcheon’s transition from an outlying mission of a Jinju parish to part of a Catholic pastoral network centered in Hadong.
That relationship continues today. A 2020 Diocese of Masan feature on Jingyo Parish explicitly names Bukcheon, Okjong, and Samjang as the parish’s three mission stations. The verifiable history of Bukcheon can therefore be traced from its establishment by Bonggok-dong in 1987, through its transfer to Jingyo in 1990, to its continuing role as a rural Catholic community in Hadong.
