About this place

Bonggok-dong Catholic Church is a parish in Area 1 of the Jinju District of the Diocese of Masan. It serves Catholics in the northwestern part of central Jinju through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The Catholic directory names Our Lady of the Rosary as the parish patron, and the community has long been one of the important centers from which the parish structure of Jinju developed and expanded.

A notable feature of the parish is the active participation of lay Catholics in its formation. The diocesan history records that, when the new church was planned, the project adopted as a principle the construction of the church through fundraising led by the faithful, described as a first for the diocese. This background makes Bonggok-dong more than an administrative subdivision: it is a parish whose members took an active role in building the foundations of their own community. Alongside devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary, its experience of giving rise to new Catholic communities as Jinju changed is an important part of its identity.

History & origins

The beginnings of Bonggok-dong Parish lie in Okbong-dong Parish’s plan to divide its pastoral territory as the Catholic population of Jinju increased. From 1970, Okbong-dong began considering a reorganization of the city’s pastoral areas, and in September of that year it purchased about 652 pyeong of land in Bonggok-dong for a future church. As plans for a third parish serving western Jinju became more concrete, the project was shaped around direct participation by the faithful in building the new church.

In 1977, a formal request was made to the diocese to establish a new parish for Bonggok-dong and surrounding areas. After approval at the priests’ assembly that autumn, Bonggok-dong Parish was established on December 28, 1977. Its first pastor, Father Lucio Kang Young-gu, arranged a temporary worship space and began construction of a permanent church in September 1978. The project faced such severe financial difficulty that part of the parish property had to be sold, but the community’s fundraising and labor made it possible to complete the two-story church on April 18, 1979.

The parish later became a source of further Catholic expansion in western Jinju. In 1987 Bonggok-dong established the Gonyang and Bukcheon mission stations, which were transferred to Jingyo Parish in 1990. In 1991, Sinan-dong Parish was also separated from Bonggok-dong as an independent parish. This history shows that Bonggok-dong did more than establish itself as a parish: it helped organize surrounding Catholic communities and link the growth of new mission stations and parishes with the changing city.
