About this place
Anui Mission Catholic Church is the church used in Anui-myeon, Hamyang-gun, by Anui Mission Parish of the Jinju District in the Diocese of Masan. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists two addresses under the parish—Anui Church and Wicheon Church—showing that this community has a pastoral structure different from an ordinary parish centered on a single church. Its patron is St. Paul the Apostle.
Within this structure, Anui Church is an important center where Catholics in northern Hamyang and nearby areas continue their liturgical, sacramental, and community life. The word “Mission” in the parish name also corresponds to the character of a community that serves a broad, dispersed population through two churches. Visitors will understand Anui Mission more accurately if they see it not merely as the name of one building but as a parish caring for faith communities in both Anui and Wicheon, with Anui Church as one of its principal church sites. The fact that churches in two different administrative counties, Hamyang and Geochang, are listed within one parish also clearly reflects the broad territorial character of this mission parish.
History & origins
Anui Mission Parish began as Anui Mission Station. According to the official history of the Diocese of Masan, in August 1955 Kim So-bundal (Kim Maria), a teacher at Seonghui Academy attached to Hamyang Parish, rented a single room in Anui-myeon and began evangelizing her neighbors, teaching catechism to about twenty catechumens and forming the first community. In 1956, the pastor of Geochang purchased a three-room house for use as a mission station, and in 1958 Fr. Joseph Jeong Su-gil, pastor of Hamyang, placed Anui under Hamyang Parish and acquired land for a future mission building.
Around 1960, however, Kim Maria moved to Daegu, and the migration of local Catholics to the cities further weakened the community. The mission station was closed around 1970. When Kim Maria returned to Anui around 1979 and resumed evangelization, catechumens began to gather again; the abandoned mission building was repaired, and the mission station was re-established around 1980. The disappearance and later rebuilding of the local community through the efforts of believers is a distinctive feature of Anui's church history.
In 1989, donations from Catholics in Busan and Incheon, together with the assistance of Fr. Augustine Lee Chang-seop, provided the foundation for a new church. The planned 80-pyeong building was completed in April 1990 and dedicated on May 6 by Bishop Joseph Jang Byeong-hwa. After years of mission activity, interruption, and reconstruction, the community finally acquired a stable church building.
Two official sources record slightly different administrative dates for the transition to parish status. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea gives December 29, 2008 as the parish's establishment date, while the Diocese of Masan history states that on January 6, 2009 Anui Mission Station was joined with Wicheon Mission Station, then under Geochang Parish, elevated to church status, and separated from Hamyang Parish. Keeping both dates as recorded rather than collapsing them into one gives a more accurate picture of how the community that began as a mission station became today's parish serving both Anui and Wicheon.
