About this place

Junggye Yang-eop Catholic Church is a parish in the Nowon district of the Seoul Archdiocese, serving the Junggye area from 29 Junggye-ro 12-gil. The current Catholic directory lists it as “Junggye Yang-eop (formerly Junggyebon-dong),” and the parish is dedicated to Father Thomas Choe Yang-eop, Korea’s second Catholic priest.

The parish website provides information on Mass, sacraments, catechesis, and pastoral groups, and also preserves a dedicated photographic record of the church’s construction and dedication. The present name places Father Choe Yang-eop at the forefront of the parish’s identity, linking ordinary neighborhood ministry with the missionary spirit associated with him.

History & origins

The official establishment date of Junggye Yang-eop Parish is February 19, 1998. The current Catholic directory gives its name as “Junggye Yang-eop (formerly Junggyebon-dong),” preserving the fact that the parish was previously known as Junggyebon-dong Catholic Church.

The former name is also visible in the parish’s own archives. Bulletins preserved on the official website from 2012 and early 2013 repeatedly use “Junggyebon-dong Catholic Church,” including the bulletin dated March 3, 2013. This confirms that the old name remained in actual parish use at least through that period.

The parish later came to be known by its present name, Junggye Yang-eop, with Father Thomas Choe Yang-eop as its patron. The official website also preserves a photographic record of the church construction, including the groundbreaking and major stages of the building work, keeping the community’s construction and dedication memory within the parish archive.
