About this place

Junggok-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul’s 8th Seongdong–Gwangjin District, located at 381 Neungdong-ro, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. Its patron is St. Joseph. The Korean Catholic Directory records the parish as established on November 22, 1973, and members of the Inbo Sacred Body Congregation currently participate in its parish apostolate.

As the local parish for Catholics in the Junggok-dong area, it is a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life, continuing a Catholic community that took shape amid the expansion of the Church in eastern Seoul during the 1970s.

History & origins

Junggok-dong Parish was established on November 22, 1973, amid rapid residential development and growth in the Catholic population of eastern Seoul in the early 1970s. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s history of Sangbong-dong Parish records that Junggok-dong was separated from Sangbong-dong on that date.

In September 1974, Myeonmok-dong Parish was in turn created by dividing territory from Sangbong-dong and Junggok-dong. The early history of Junggok-dong therefore reflects the rapid expansion of Catholic parish communities in eastern Seoul during this period.
