About this place

Jesus and Mary Sacred Heart Monastery in Ilgwang-eup, Gijang-gun, Busan, is a male religious community of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists it as the “Order of Friars Minor Conventual – Busan Ilgwang Jesus and Mary Sacred Heart Monastery,” and gives the order’s official English name as Order of Friars Minor Conventual (O.F.M. Conv.).

Rather than being a parish in itself, the monastery is a house for Franciscan religious life and apostolate. The Korean Province of the Conventual Franciscans carries out parish ministry, retreats, spiritual assistance to the Secular Franciscan Order, the Militia Immaculatae, social welfare, publishing, and Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation activities. The Ilgwang monastery is one of the province’s presences in the Busan area and is best understood as a fraternity that serves the Church and the local community from a life of prayer and common Franciscan life.

History & origins

The history of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Korea began in Busan in 1958. The order’s official Korean Province material identifies the arrival in Busan of Francis Paldani of the Italian Province of Padua as the starting point of its mission in Korea. After establishing a base in Busan, the friars gradually extended their presence to other parts of the country.

According to a historical account published by the Catholic Peace Weekly, the early friars first engaged in parish ministry at Beomil-dong in Busan and later established friaries in places including Daeyeon-dong and Ilgwang. The present Jesus and Mary Sacred Heart Monastery in Ilgwang can therefore be understood as part of the expansion into Gijang of a Conventual Franciscan presence that first took root in Busan. The sources reviewed, however, do not provide the precise opening date of the Ilgwang monastery or a detailed construction history of its present buildings.

The Korean community became a custody in 1975 and was raised to the status of a province in 2001. This institutional development shows how the small community that began in Busan grew into a province with several friaries and apostolates across Korea. The Ilgwang monastery continues that long-standing Franciscan presence in the Busan region.
