About this place

Yun Ji-chung Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of a parish in District 4 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju, serving Seogok and parts of the nearby newer districts of Jeonju. The current diocesan directory names Blessed Paul Yun Ji-chung and Blessed James Kwon Sang-yeon as the parish patrons. Their names stand at the center of the parish's identity, so the church combines its ordinary role as a place for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life with a deliberate remembrance of the faith of the Korean martyrs.

The present name is connected with the Diocese of Jeonju's project commemorating the 230th anniversary of the 1791 Sinhae Persecution. The diocese designated the new churches of Seogok, Hyoja 4-dong, and Miryong-dong to bear the names Yun Ji-chung, Kwon Sang-yeon, and Yun Ji-heon respectively, and Seogok Parish began using the name Yun Ji-chung when its new church was dedicated. The site is therefore more than a parish church named after a martyr: it is a place intentionally shaped by the diocese so that the witness of Korea's first martyrs remains present within the life of a contemporary parish.

History & origins

The parish did not begin under the name Yun Ji-chung. It was established in 2003 after being separated from Seosin-dong Parish and was originally known as Seogok Parish, using a church building of about 447 square meters. As the years passed, the space became too small and the building aged, leading the parish to undertake construction of a new church.

Work on the new church began in December 2020 and was completed in April 2022. During the same period, the Diocese of Jeonju designated three parishes building new churches as memorial churches for the first martyrs of the 1791 Sinhae Persecution, and in May 2022 formally chose the names Yun Ji-chung, Kwon Sang-yeon, and Yun Ji-heon. Seogok Parish was the first of the three to approach dedication of its new church and therefore began using the name Yun Ji-chung Catholic Church.

On June 25, 2022, Bishop John Kim Son-tae presided over the blessing of the new church, giving concrete form to both the new building and the parish's new name. The expanded complex includes the main worship space, classrooms, a rectory, and administrative rooms. The change was therefore not simply an architectural enlargement: it marked the point at which a parish founded in 2003 began to carry the memory of the first martyrs Yun Ji-chung and Kwon Sang-yeon in its very name and sacred space.
