About this place

Yongmeori Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of Yongmeori Parish in District 2 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju. Located in Wansan-gu, Jeonju, it serves Catholics in Hyoja-dong, Seowansan-dong, and neighboring residential areas through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The current diocesan directory identifies the parish patron as St. Joseph Cho Yun-ho, a Korean martyr saint.

The parish territory extends across several neighborhoods in southwestern Jeonju, giving the church a clear role as a Catholic community center within an urban residential area. Its patron, St. Joseph Cho Yun-ho, is closely associated with the martyr heritage cherished by the Diocese of Jeonju, and that memory is carried into ordinary parish worship and sacramental life. Changeable information such as Mass schedules and current personnel is therefore less important to the lasting identity of the place than its function as a territorial parish and faith community.

History & origins

According to official diocesan material, Yongmeori Parish was established in January 1989. It began as a new parish community in southwestern Jeonju under the patronage of St. Joseph Cho Yun-ho and subsequently became the parish serving Catholics in the Hyoja-dong and Seowansan-dong areas.

Liturgical music also became an organized part of parish life relatively early. In material prepared for a diocesan sacred-music festival in 2023, the Diocese of Jeonju records that a mothers' choir began around the time of the parish's establishment in 1989 and that the mixed Gratia Choir was organized in 1995 to serve the liturgy of the Mass. This provides a concrete example of how lay liturgical service developed as the new parish community matured.

Public diocesan sources do not provide a sufficiently detailed chronology of church construction, expansion, or relocation. The history of Yongmeori Church is therefore best summarized through the confirmed establishment of the parish, the formation of its early community, and the growth of organized liturgical service such as the choir. Together these developments show the process by which a new urban parish took root as a stable Catholic community.
