About this place

Yongjin Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of a parish in Yongjin-eup, Wanju County, within the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju. The parish serves Catholics in the Ganjung-ri, Gueok-ri, Sangsam-ri, Sangun-ri, Yongheung-ri, and Ungok-ri areas. The current diocesan directory names St. Bartholomew Jeong Mun-ho, a Korean martyr saint, as the parish patron. In a part of Yongjin where rural communities meet newer residential development, the church is the center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.

The parish has also developed spaces for prayer and fellowship in addition to its liturgical role. Diocesan records concerning an adoration chapel, a parish rest area, and a Stations of the Cross path show an effort to provide places for personal prayer and encounters among parishioners. These features help explain Yongjin Church as a parish center supporting the everyday faith life of Catholics spread across the surrounding area.

History & origins

The current Diocese of Jeonju directory records that Yongjin Parish was established in January 2000. This provided Catholics in the Yongjin area of Wanju with the structure of an independent parish, dedicated to St. Bartholomew Jeong Mun-ho as its patron.

As the parish developed, it also improved spaces for prayer and fellowship around the church. In November 2019 the Diocese of Jeonju reported the blessing of a Eucharistic adoration chapel and the “Agatha Rest Area” at Yongjin Church. The adoration chapel was intended as a quiet place of prayer, while the rest area provided a place for parishioners to meet and share fellowship. The facilities were also described as preserving the memory and offering of the late Agatha Kim Bong-ja.

In 2020 the outdoor Stations of the Cross around the church were renewed and blessed. The diocesan account describes fourteen stations carved from chestnut wood together with renewed landscaping. Undertaken during the COVID-19 period, the project shows how the parish continued to shape its physical environment not simply for expansion but to support prayer and meditation within the community.
