About this place

Yongan Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of a rural parish in northern Iksan, belonging to District 6 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju. The current diocesan directory states that the parish serves Yongan-myeon together with parts of Seongdang-myeon, Yongdong-myeon, and Ungpo-myeon, and that several mission-station communities are connected with the parish. Its patron is St. Michael the Archangel.

Because Catholics are dispersed across a broad rural area, Yongan Parish functions not only through its main church but also as a pastoral center linking the parish church with its mission stations. The parish church is the main place for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community gatherings, while mission stations help sustain Catholic life for faithful living farther from the center. This parish-and-mission-station structure is an important feature distinguishing Yongan from a compact urban parish.

History & origins

The current Diocese of Jeonju directory records that Yongan Parish was established in December 1976. This gave Catholics in Yongan-myeon and neighboring rural areas the framework of an independent parish in which to continue Mass and sacramental life, with St. Michael the Archangel as their patron.

In the early 1990s the parish became associated with a large-scale Rosary campaign that moved beyond an internal parish need. A Catholic Times report explains that an initiative that had begun as a prayer campaign connected with plans for a new church developed into a “70-million-decade Rosary” movement offered for the evangelization of the Korean people and peaceful reunification. It was presented as an example of prayer in a small rural parish expanding toward wider concerns of the Church and society.

Yongan Parish continued thereafter as a rural parish serving a broad territory together with its mission-station communities. Public sources do not provide a sufficiently detailed chronology of church construction or the development of each mission station, so this history focuses on the establishment of the parish, its distinctive prayer movement in the 1990s, and the continuation of its rural parish structure.
