About this place

Yochon Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of Yochon Parish in District 2 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju. It serves Catholics in central Gimje and the Juksan-myeon and Buryang-myeon areas through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The current diocesan directory names the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the parish patron and also lists a mission-station community within the parish territory.

The church is both an ordinary territorial parish and a place where the Catholic memory of martyrdom in Gimje is preserved. Diocesan pilgrimage material presents Yochon Church as the Gimje Martyrs' Shrine and connects it with the memory of Blessed Stanislaus Han Jeong-heum, who was martyred during the 1801 persecution, and with the broader history of the local martyrs. Visitors can therefore understand the site as a place where a living parish community and the historical memory of Catholic witness in Gimje meet.

History & origins

The roots of the Catholic community in Gimje are found in the Geomsan-ri mission station. According to pilgrimage material published by the Diocese of Jeonju, a mission community began at Geomsan-ri in 1920 and a church building was established there in 1931. The community continued to grow and was raised to the status of Gimje Parish in June 1935, with its early church located in the area locally known as Seongdang Village in Geomsan-ri.

During the Korean War, in May 1951, the parish moved from Geomsan-ri to the present Yochon-dong area. It later acquired the site of a former temple and built a church and rectory there in 1955, establishing a permanent base for the Catholic community in central Gimje. In the 1980s the Sinpung area was separated to form a new parish, and the former Gimje Parish continued under the name Yochon Parish.

The connection between parish history and the memory of martyrdom in Gimje became more explicit in recent years. Diocesan material records that on August 27, 2023, Yochon Church was proclaimed and blessed as the Gimje Martyrs' Shrine. Its history therefore extends beyond parish relocation and institutional growth: the site now also preserves the memory of the Catholic community that developed in Gimje and of the faith witnessed by local martyrs during the persecutions.
