About this place

Yeoui-dong Parish serves the northern Jeonju area of the Diocese of Jeonju and has jurisdiction over a broad territory including Yeoui-dong, Hwajeon-dong, Banwol-dong, Jang-dong, Manseong-dong, and neighboring areas in Deokjin-gu. The diocese's current information identifies Saint Peter Yi Myeong-seo as the parish patron, continuing a patronal tradition rooted in the faith of the Korean martyrs.

Across a territory that includes residential areas as well as districts shaped by urban and industrial expansion, the parish serves as a center linking Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life. The present name, Yeoui-dong Parish, was adopted in response to a change in the local administrative name, but the community itself continues the history of the former Dongsan-dong Parish. Understanding both names is therefore important for understanding the parish today.

History & origins

The parish now known as Yeoui-dong began in May 1984 as Dongsan Parish, separated from Deokjin Parish. A diocesan bulletin of the time introduced it as the first commemorative parish established by the Diocese of Jeonju for the bicentennial of the Catholic Church in Korea. The new community began with modest facilities centered on a small church and rectory, and roughly six hundred Catholics formed its initial membership.

As the community grew, spaces for education and pastoral activity were expanded. As part of a project marking the parish's thirtieth anniversary, the Saint Peter Yi Myeong-seo Hall was completed in 2013, and the diocese reported its blessing the following year. The building included meeting rooms, a rectory, and a convent, supporting the parish's common life.

In 2019, the City of Jeonju changed the administrative name Dongsan-dong to Yeoui-dong as part of an effort to remove a place-name associated with the colonial period. The Diocese of Jeonju accordingly changed the parish name from Dongsan-dong Parish to Yeoui-dong Parish that same year. Today's Yeoui-dong Parish is therefore the same faith community that began as Dongsan Parish in 1984 and continued its history under a new local name.
