About this place
Yeosan Parish is a Catholic parish in the Iksan area of the Diocese of Jeonju, serving all of Yeosan-myeon together with parts of nearby districts and parts of Yeonmu-eup in Nonsan, Chungcheongnam-do. The diocese's current information identifies Our Lady, Queen of Martyrs as the parish's patronal title. Alongside ordinary parish ministry, the parish also serves as a center of pastoral care for pilgrims visiting the Yeosan Martyrs' Shrine.
Yeosan is a town where memories of nineteenth-century persecution and martyrdom remain at several sites. Located at the center of this landscape, Yeosan Parish combines the functions of a territorial parish with those of a pilgrimage center devoted to the memory of the martyrs. It is therefore both the parish church for local Catholics and a natural starting point for understanding and visiting the martyrdom sites of Yeosan.
History & origins
The formation of Yeosan Parish was closely connected with the Diocese of Jeonju's effort to commemorate the area's history of martyrdom. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that after the diocese designated Yeosan as a sacred site in 1951, Nabawi Parish, which then had jurisdiction over the area, began plans to build a church there. Land was acquired in several stages during the 1950s, and construction on the present site proceeded in 1958, with the church and catechetical building completed that autumn.
In January 1959, Yeosan was separated from Nabawi Parish and began as an independent parish community, with Father Gwon Yeong-gyun Anthony as its first pastor. From the beginning, the parish served not only local Catholics but also as a pastoral base for caring for the sites associated with the 1868 persecution and fostering pilgrimage to the martyrs.
The diocese's current parish page lists an establishment date in October 1958, whereas historical sources distinguish between completion of the church building in 1958 and separation of the parish from Nabawi in early 1959. For that reason, this account describes the church as being completed in the autumn of 1958 and the parish community as formally emerging from Nabawi in early 1959. Yeosan Parish has since continued to combine ordinary parish ministry with care for the local martyrdom sites.
