About this place

Yeonji-dong Parish is a Catholic parish in the Jeongeup area of the Diocese of Jeonju, serving Yeonji-dong, Sangpyeong-dong, Nongso-dong, Gongpyeong-dong, and a broad territory in the northern and western parts of Jeongeup. The diocese's current information identifies Saint Joseph Han Jae-gwon as its patron, and the parish is linked with two mission stations, allowing it to serve Catholics across both urban and rural areas.

Saint Joseph Han Jae-gwon belongs to the martyr tradition of the Diocese of Jeonju, and his patronage shows that the parish carries the memory of Korean martyrdom within its local identity. Today Yeonji-dong Parish serves as a center where Catholics from the city and surrounding rural districts celebrate Mass and the sacraments, receive faith formation, and share community life.

History & origins

Yeonji-dong Parish was born from a plan to establish a second parish in the Jeongeup area as part of the bicentennial of the Catholic Church in Korea. The January 27, 1985 issue of the Diocese of Jeonju bulletin records that the existing Jeongeup Parish promoted construction of a new church as a bicentennial project and that Bishop Michael Park Jeong-il presided over its dedication on January 23.

The diocese's current information and a 2005 diocesan bulletin give February 22, 1985 as the establishment date of Yeonji-dong Parish and identify today's Sigi-dong Parish as its mother parish. When Yeonji-dong was separated, the long-standing Jeongeup Parish continued under the name Sigi-dong Parish. Saint Joseph Han Jae-gwon was chosen as the patron of the new parish.

Yeonji-dong thus emerged amid the growth of Jeongeup's urban area and a reorganization of parish boundaries. It later developed as a parish connecting the city with mission stations in surrounding rural districts, including Buk-myeon. The difference of about a month between the church dedication and the parish establishment reflects two separate steps—the blessing of the building and the canonical or administrative formation of the parish—and distinguishing them helps clarify the parish's early history.
