About this place

Wonpyeong Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of a parish in District 3 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju, located in Geumsan-myeon, Gimje. The parish serves Geumsan-myeon and Bongnam-myeon together with parts of Geumgu-myeon and neighboring areas. The current diocesan directory identifies St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon as its patron. It is a rural parish where Catholics in southeastern Gimje gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.

Because the parish territory extends across several townships, Wonpyeong is less a compact town-centered parish than a community linking Catholics dispersed through the countryside. The parish grew out of a mission station formerly under Suryu Parish and later became an independent parish in its own right, forming one of the long-standing centers of Catholic evangelization in the Gimje area. This historical root gives important context for understanding the significance of the present local parish.

History & origins

The roots of Wonpyeong Church reach back to 1938, when a mission station was established under Suryu Parish. In a 2018 diocesan account marking the 40th anniversary of Wonpyeong Parish, the Diocese of Jeonju records that the mission station was founded during the ministry of Father Seok Jong-gwan of Suryu Parish. It provided a local center where Catholics in the rural southeastern Gimje area could pray together and sustain their faith life.

The mission community was raised to the status of an independent parish in 1978. The diocesan account records the establishment of Wonpyeong Parish with responsibility for Geumsan-myeon, Bongnam-myeon, Geumgu-myeon, and what was then Ongdong-myeon of Jeongeup County, while the current parish directory gives the establishment date as January 7, 1978. The transition from mission station to parish marked the growth of the local Catholic community into an independent pastoral unit.

In October 2018 the parish celebrated its 40th anniversary with a commemorative Mass and community events. The diocesan record describes Wonpyeong as one of the parishes that had played a role in the evangelization of the Gimje area and also remembered the parishioners who had served the community over the decades. Its history can therefore be summarized as the growth of a rural mission community into an independent parish that continues to carry the memory of Catholic evangelization in the region.
