About this place
Wolmyeong-dong Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of Wolmyeong-dong Parish in District 5 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju. Its parish territory includes Wolmyeong-dong, Sinchang-dong, Sinheung-dong, Haemang-dong, and several other neighborhoods in the older center of Gunsan. The current diocesan directory identifies St. Peter as the parish patron. Having developed from one of Gunsan's long-established Catholic communities, it continues to serve as a center where local Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.
The older downtown area in which the church stands bears many layers of Gunsan's modern urban history. Within that setting, Wolmyeong-dong Parish is significant as a community that has carried Catholic memory across generations rather than serving only one period of the city's growth. To understand the site, it is helpful to see not only the building but also its identity as a diocesan parish dedicated to St. Peter and rooted in the continuing Catholic life of central Gunsan.
History & origins
The origins of Wolmyeong-dong Parish lie in the growth of the existing Catholic community in Gunsan and the preparations for a new parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that a committee for parish division was organized from 1956, and that land and buildings were secured in Wolmyeong-dong in 1960, after which existing structures were adapted for use as a church and rectory. On this foundation, the community was separated from Dunyul-dong Parish and became an independent parish in 1961.
The exact date of establishment differs among authoritative sources: the current diocesan directory gives November 8, while the Diocese of Jeonju's 60th-anniversary article and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia give July 2. This account therefore uses only the point on which the sources agree, namely that the parish was established in 1961. After the parish took shape, a convent was provided and local educational activity began, while the existing church was enlarged in the mid-1960s to respond to the growing community.
Wolmyeong-dong Parish continued through later changes in central Gunsan. In 2021 it celebrated its 60th anniversary with a thanksgiving Mass and marked the anniversary through practices such as Scripture reading and writing and the Rosary. The history of the parish is therefore more than a chronology of buildings: it is the story of a community separated from Dunyul-dong, established as an independent parish, and sustained in faith across generations.
