About this place

Urim Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of a parish in District 2 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju, serving apartment and residential neighborhoods in the Samcheon-dong and Hyoja-dong areas of Wansan-gu. The current diocesan directory identifies the parish patron as St. Peter Yi Myeong-seo, a Korean martyr saint.

Because the parish developed in an expanding urban residential area, Urim Church has a strong role as a local community where Catholics can gather regularly for liturgy, faith formation, and parish life close to where they live. Its patronage by a Korean martyr saint links contemporary urban parish life with the martyr tradition cherished by the Diocese of Jeonju. The present church is the result of a gradual process in which the parish secured and developed a permanent space for its community.

History & origins

Urim Parish was established in January 2002, but it did not begin with the permanent church seen today. According to Diocese of Jeonju records, the new parish initially celebrated Mass on the fourth and fifth floors of a commercial building. The community then worked gradually to obtain a more stable and permanent place for parish life.

Diocesan accounts state that the parish acquired the present site, where restaurant buildings had stood, remodeled the existing structures, and began celebrating Mass there in November 2009. As the community continued to grow and looked toward long-term parish life, plans for a new church were developed, and construction began on April 1, 2017. The sequence from rented commercial space to remodeled premises and then to a purpose-built church shows the parish's step-by-step establishment.

After about one year and seven months of construction, the new church was dedicated on November 10, 2018. The Diocese of Jeonju described it as a church drawing on traditional Gothic forms and noted the prayers and offerings of parishioners that accompanied the building process. Urim's history can therefore be understood as the shared effort of a newly founded parish community that moved from temporary spaces toward a permanent church of its own.
