About this place
Unbong Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of a parish in District 3 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju. Its territory extends beyond Unbong-eup to Inwol-myeon, Ayeong-myeon, and Sannae-myeon, covering a broad area on the eastern side of Jirisan in Namwon. The current diocesan directory names St. Joseph as the parish patron and lists Inwol mission station as part of the parish.
Because Catholics are dispersed across several mountainous towns and townships, Unbong Parish plays an important role in linking the parish church with its mission station and sustaining Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life over a large area. Its broad territory creates a pastoral environment quite different from that of a compact urban parish, and the church functions as a focal point bringing geographically separated Catholics into one parish community.
History & origins
Unbong Parish was created as a new parish of the Diocese of Jeonju in 2010. The exact date differs among current and historical diocesan records, so this account uses only the non-conflicting point that the parish was established in 2010. Its creation gave Catholics in Unbong-eup and the surrounding mountain area an independent parish structure in which to continue their faith life.
After the parish was founded, work continued to establish the practical foundations needed for pastoral ministry. The diocesan chronology records the blessing of the Unbong rectory in June 2011, and a diocesan report explains that construction had begun the previous autumn, paused during winter, and was then completed. The rectory represented an important step in providing the living and administrative base needed for a newly established parish with resident pastoral care.
A 2020 diocesan bulletin records a Mass planned for the 10th anniversary of Unbong Parish on the Solemnity of the Assumption. The anniversary marked a decade in which the newly created parish had taken root as the Catholic center for its large rural and mountainous territory. Unbong's history can therefore be understood through the creation of a new parish, the building of its pastoral infrastructure, and the continuing consolidation of its community.
