About this place
Ujeon Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of a parish in District 2 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju, serving residential neighborhoods and apartment complexes in the Hyoja-dong and Samcheon-dong areas of Wansan-gu. The current diocesan directory names the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the parish patron and records a community of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus in association with the parish.
Ujeon Parish is one of the parishes that grew with the urban expansion of southwestern Jeonju, linking Catholics across an increasingly large residential area. The later separation and creation of neighboring parishes from its former territory shows that Ujeon once served as a center for a broader Catholic population. Today's church can therefore be understood as a local parish continuing the life of a community shaped by that period of urban growth and ecclesial expansion.
History & origins
Ujeon Parish was established as a new parish of the Diocese of Jeonju in January 1988. It began during a period of residential expansion in southwestern Jeonju, serving Catholics in the Hyoja-dong and Samcheon-dong areas under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
As the parish community grew, portions of its former territory were separated to create new parishes. In a diocesan account marking Ujeon's 30th anniversary in 2018, Urim Parish and Hyoja 4-dong Parish are identified as communities that were later established from Ujeon's territory. This reflects the way the parish absorbed growth during urban development and then helped create the conditions for smaller, more locally accessible parish communities.
In September 2018 the parish celebrated a Mass for its 30th anniversary, accompanied by charitable activities prepared as part of the commemoration. The anniversary was more than a numerical milestone: it offered a way to look back on the formation of the parish community, its contribution to the birth of neighboring parishes, and its continuing role in the local Church.
