About this place
Uadong Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of a parish in District 1 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju, serving residential neighborhoods in Uadong, Deokjin-gu. The current diocesan directory identifies the parish patron as St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Korea's first Catholic priest and a martyr saint.
The parish has developed a tradition of connecting Catholics through neighborhood-based small communities and encouraging them to live the Word and the liturgy together. Diocesan records have highlighted Uadong Parish for its organization of district communities and regular sharing of Scripture. The church is therefore more than a building where Mass is celebrated; it is the center of a parish that seeks to help Catholics form relationships and share faith within the neighborhoods where they live.
History & origins
The current Diocese of Jeonju directory records that Uadong Parish was established in January 2002. With St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon as its patron, an independent parish community was formed to serve the Uadong area of eastern Jeonju and provide a stable pastoral base within the growing urban residential district.
One distinctive development after the parish's foundation was its emphasis on small Christian communities. The Diocese of Jeonju records that in May 2018 Uadong Parish held its first “Small Community Day,” bringing together neighborhood and sub-neighborhood groups. The initiative sought to strengthen faith sharing and fellowship not only through large parish events but also in communities closer to the homes and daily lives of parishioners.
In 2019 diocesan material introduced Uadong as a model parish for small-community ministry, recording several district communities and regular gatherings for sharing the Word. This development shows that the history of Uadong Parish is not limited to buildings or institutional dates; it also includes the way an urban parish organized and deepened Catholic relationships in smaller local communities after its establishment.
