About this place

Taein Mission Station belongs to Sintaein Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju and has a historical character unlike that of an ordinary mission station because it served for a time as the parish center before the present Sintaein Parish took shape. At the site today, an older mission-station building stands beside a new chapel consecrated in 2015, allowing visitors to see in one place the transition from the period when Taein was a parish center to its later life as a mission station.

Its significance lies in more than the survival of an old building. The parish that began at Neunggyo moved to Taein and later moved again to the Sintaein area; during that process Taein served for a time as the pastoral center for Catholics across a broad district and subsequently continued as a mission-station community. Visitors can therefore understand Taein Mission Station as a historical base where the predecessor of Sintaein Parish once stood and as a place that still expresses continuity with that earlier history.

History & origins

The roots of Sintaein Parish go back to Neunggyo Parish, established in 1929 at Neungdari in Sannae-myeon, Jeongeup County. As the Catholic community around Neungdari grew, the parish was created, and its first pastor, Father Kim Chang-hyeon, pursued a plan to move the parish center to Taein in view of transportation and future pastoral conditions. As a result, the parish moved to Taein-myeon in 1935 and became established there as Taein Parish.

Diocesan sources explain that Taein functioned as a parish jurisdiction for nineteen years, from 1935 through 1954. The parish center was then moved to the Sintaein area, while the existing Catholic community and church site remained at Taein. A diocesan feature on mission stations records that Taein became a mission station in 1955. Read together, the records indicate a transition in which the parish moved around 1954 and Taein settled into its mission-station status the following year.

The old building continued to serve the Catholic community after Taein became a mission station. In 2015, a new mission-station chapel was built and consecrated immediately beside the older building. Taein therefore preserves both the physical trace of its parish period and the newer chapel, making visible the history of a parish center that moved from Neunggyo to Taein and then to Sintaein.
