About this place

Supjeongi Parish belongs to District 4 of the Diocese of Jeonju and serves several residential areas around Jinbuk-dong and Supjeongi-ro in Jeonju. Its patron is St. Peter Jeong Won-ji, and the parish day is observed on September 20, his feast day. Members of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres serve alongside the parish community.

The name 'Supjeongi' is closely connected with the memory of martyrdom in the surrounding area. Diocesan sources explain that the parish is located near the Supjeongi martyrdom site, a place of execution in the Joseon period associated with a number of martyrs. The parish therefore serves not only as the local Catholic community for nearby residents but also as a place where the memory of Jeonju's martyrs is carried into ordinary parish life.

History & origins

Supjeongi Parish was established on December 15, 1976, and diocesan records state that the parish's first Mass was celebrated that day. It chose St. Peter Jeong Won-ji, who was martyred at Supjeongi during the Byeongin Persecution, as its patron, and designated September 20, his feast day, as the parish day.

As the parish grew, it also gave rise to a new parish community. According to diocesan bulletins and the introduction to the parish's twenty-five-year history, Seosin-dong Parish was separated from Supjeongi in 1988. This reflects the way the parish expanded its pastoral base as the Catholic population of central Jeonju grew.

In 2001, for the twenty-fifth anniversary of its establishment, the parish published 'Twenty-Five Years of Supjeongi Parish,' organizing its history from the period before its establishment through the activities of parish groups. The diocesan chronology also records the blessing of the Seong Jeong Won-ji Hall at Supjeongi in 2013, showing how the parish continued to preserve the memory of its patron saint and the local tradition of martyrdom within its own parish space.
