About this place
Sunchang Parish belongs to the Diocese of Jeonju's Imsun-Namwon-Muju-Jinan-Jangsu area and serves most of Sunchang-gun, centered on Sunchang-eup, except for Bokheung-myeon and Ssangchi-myeon. Its patron is St. Joseph, and the parish day is celebrated on March 19, the Solemnity of St. Joseph. The parish also currently oversees Donggye Mission Station.
Because it serves a broad rural county-level area, Sunchang Parish functions as the center that connects local Catholics to Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The church building has changed several times on the foundation of a long-established local community, and the present church continues the history of that parish community.
History & origins
The movement to establish a parish in Sunchang-eup took concrete shape around 1957. According to a diocesan pilgrimage resource, the arrival in Sunchang-eup of Andreas Lee Man-jun from another region prompted Fr. Park Seong-un, then pastor of Namwon Parish, to discuss creating a new parish. Lawrence Jo Yong-jin was sent to Sunchang-eup as a catechist-leader, and land was acquired for a church as the local community was organized.
As Bishop Kim Hyeon-bae promoted the establishment of one parish in each county, Sunchang Parish was created on March 19, 1960, and Fr. Augustine Lee Sang-ho was appointed its first pastor. The church building was dedicated in 1961 and was expanded in 1969 as the community grew.
A new church was eventually built to replace the structure that had served the parish for many years, and it was dedicated on December 5, 2020. The history of Sunchang Parish is thus a process of establishing a pastoral center for Catholics across a county, enlarging its worship space as the community grew, and finally renewing that space for a new generation.
