Sucheong Mission Station

History & origins

The Catholic memory of the Sucheong area reaches back to the time of the Byeongin Persecution. A 2022 diocesan feature on mission stations cites a record that the body of a martyr was buried on a nearby mountainside in 1866 and explains that Catholics fleeing persecution later gathered in the mountainous Gosan area to form Catholic villages. Sucheong Mission Station was formally established in 1888.

The mission chapel was blessed in 1927, by which time the community had grown enough that about one hundred people were recorded as receiving Confirmation at the blessing. Sucheong was elevated to parish status in 1942, but the parish was closed in 1951 and it became a mission station again. After a period under Samnye Parish, it came under Gosan Parish in 1958.

As the decades passed, the old mission building began to lean and faced a risk of collapse. In 2020, with advice from the Honam Church History Research Institute and help from the parish community, reinforcing supports were installed on the exterior and inside the building, and mission Masses that had been interrupted were at one point resumed.

The history of Sucheong thus spans the formation of mountain Catholic villages after the persecutions, a period as an independent parish, its return to mission-station status, and later efforts to preserve its aging building. It is a clear example of how mission stations in the Diocese of Jeonju have carried long memories through changing local Catholic communities.
