About this place

Ssanggyo-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and carries forward one of the long-established Catholic communities in the city of Namwon. According to official diocesan information, the parish is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and serves as a pastoral center where local Catholics participate in Mass and the sacraments, pray, and sustain parish community life.

The parish is significant because it continues the lineage of a Catholic community that was established relatively early in Namwon. Its name and pastoral territory have been adjusted over time, but the parish community itself reaches back to the period of Japanese colonial rule. Today Ssanggyo-dong is both a city parish and a place that holds the memory of a Catholic community that endured war, urban growth, and the division of new parishes.

History & origins

The prehistory of Ssanggyo-dong Parish begins on July 26, 1934, when a Catholic community known as the “Namwon Catholic Church” was organized under Subun-ri Parish in Jangsu. On June 16, 1935, a formal parish was established in Jukhang-dong, with Fr. Seok Jong-gwan serving as its first pastor. The Diocese of Jeonju continues to record that date as the establishment date of today’s Ssanggyo-dong Parish.

After the Korean War, the parish provided a new church building, and the present church was completed on August 15, 1958. As the city of Namwon grew and the Catholic population increased, educational and auxiliary facilities were expanded and new parishes were separated, gradually changing the pastoral territory.

When Dotong-dong Parish was separated on November 26, 1996, the existing parish took the name Ssanggyo-dong Catholic Church. The name changed, but the community’s lineage continued from the Namwon Catholic community and Jukhang-dong Parish of the 1930s. The diocese’s eightieth-anniversary history shows a parish that developed through education, local sharing, and the establishment of daughter parishes. Ssanggyo-dong’s history is therefore closely tied to the way the Catholic Church in Namwon expanded and reorganized its space and pastoral territory as the city changed.
