About this place

Ssangchi Mission Station belongs to Bokheung Parish of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and serves as a local center where Catholics in Ssangchi-myeon, Sunchang County gather for prayer and Mass. The diocese's current mission-station directory lists Ssangchi under Bokheung Parish, while a diocesan feature describes its hanok-style building together with statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Unlike an urban parish, a mission station is a small Catholic community without a resident priest. Ssangchi has continued as a place where Catholics scattered across a rural area support one another in faith and gather as a community. It is best understood not as an independent parish, but as a local community linked to Bokheung Parish and as a place that preserves the memory of an older Catholic village tradition.

History & origins

According to oral testimony recorded in a diocesan feature, the roots of Catholic life in the Ssangchi area reach back to Banryongchon, a Catholic village where believers who had fled persecution settled in the 1860s. A building used by that faith community was destroyed during the Korean War, after which a mission-station community continued in the Ssangchi area. This part of the story should be understood as local oral history rather than as a chronology established solely from written records.

In 1994, at the request of the parish, a married pair of lay missionaries served Ssangchi for many years through catechesis, continuing formation, and visits to local Catholics. The diocesan account records that many new believers were baptized during this period. As rural depopulation and aging progressed, however, the size of the community gradually declined.

On June 5, 2011, Bokheung Mission Station and Ssangchi Mission Station, then under Sunchang Parish, were brought together as Bokheung was elevated to a parish, and Ssangchi became a mission station under Bokheung Parish. Catholics have continued to gather there for Mass and prayer. The history of Ssangchi is significant less for the growth of a large institution than for the long continuity of a dispersed rural Catholic community.
