About this place
Soyang Catholic Church is the church of Soyang Parish in District 1 of the Diocese of Jeonju, serving all of Soyang-myeon and the Dong-sang-myeon area of Wanju-gun. The current diocesan record names St. Peter Son Seon-ji as the parish patron, and the church is the center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life for Catholics of the Soyang area.
Soyang is also closely connected with the history of the Catholic faith in Jeolla during the periods of persecution. A diocesan source explains that the area contains places where seven saints—Yi Myeong-seo, Jo Hwa-seo, Jeong Won-ji, Jo Un-ho, Jeong Mun-ho, Son Seon-ji, and Han Jae-gwon—hid and continued their life of faith. The parish’s dedication to St. Peter Son Seon-ji is closely related to this local memory. Soyang Catholic Church is therefore a place where the present parish community and the heritage of the persecuted Church can be understood together.
