About this place
Soryong-dong Catholic Church is the church of Soryong-dong Parish in the Gunsan district of the Diocese of Jeonju. The parish covers Soryong-dong, Miseong-dong, Sanbuk-dong, and Osikdo-dong in Gunsan. The current diocesan directory names St. Andrew as its patron, and the parish serves a broad pastoral area extending across residential, industrial, and port-related districts of western Gunsan.
The church is the center where local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments and take part in catechesis and community life; the parish also cares for one mission station. Formed through separation from Wolmyeong-dong Parish as the city’s living patterns changed, it now stands as an independent parish connecting Catholics throughout Soryong-dong and the western part of Gunsan.
History & origins
Soryong-dong Parish was established on February 16, 1992. Both the current diocesan record and the Catholic historical record of Wolmyeong-dong Parish confirm that Soryong-dong was separated from Wolmyeong-dong in February 1992. The division created an independent parish to care for the western part of Gunsan as the number and distribution of Catholics changed.
After its establishment, the community developed around its own church and pastoral structure. In 2017, the parish marked its twenty-fifth anniversary with a commemorative Mass, the offering of a handwritten copy of the Bible, and a community festival; the Diocese of Jeonju again recorded at that time that Soryong-dong had been separated from Wolmyeong-dong in 1992.
This history shows the development of Soryong-dong from part of an older city parish into an independent Catholic community for western Gunsan. Its present territory extends beyond Soryong-dong to Miseong-dong, Sanbuk-dong, and Osikdo-dong, demonstrating how the 1992 division became a lasting pastoral structure for the area.
