About this place
Songhak-dong Parish is a parish of the Diocese of Jeonju in the Iksan area, serving all of Songhak-dong and parts of Osan-myeon, Pyeonghwa-dong, and Mohyeon-dong. Its patron is the Good Shepherd, and the parish day is observed on Pentecost. The diocesan parish directory also notes the presence of members of the Congregation of Jesus serving alongside the parish community.
Within a living area where central Iksan meets its outskirts, Songhak-dong Parish brings Catholics from several neighborhoods together as one parish community. The Good Shepherd serves as the central symbol of the parish's identity, while the parish provides the pastoral base for local Catholics to continue their life of Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community.
History & origins
Songhak-dong Parish was established in February 1988 after being separated from Changin-dong Parish. The current diocesan directory records the establishment date as February 29, while a 2009 diocesan bulletin gives February 19, so the exact day differs between the two sources. What both sources clearly support is that the parish was separated and established in February 1988. The diocesan bulletin states that 739 households, with 1,986 registered Catholics, were transferred from Changin-dong to form the new parish.
In its early years the parish was located in a rural area and faced difficulties in maintaining parish operations, but the community grew as new urban districts developed around it. Diocesan records state that the first pastor, Fr. Aloysius Lee Tae-ju, laid the foundations of the parish.
The history of Songhak-dong Parish can therefore be understood as the growth of a parish alongside changes in the southwestern Iksan living area. A community that began in a largely rural setting gradually expanded its Catholic base as the city developed around it.
