About this place
Songcheon-dong Catholic Church is the church of Songcheon-dong Parish in the northern Jeonju district of the Diocese of Jeonju, serving several residential areas of Songcheon-dong in Deokjin-gu, Jeonju. The current diocesan directory names St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon as its patron, and the church is the center where local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments and take part in catechesis and community activities.
The parish was formed during the growth of residential districts in northern Jeonju, and later experienced the separation of part of its territory as the Catholic population around it increased. Songcheon-dong therefore has significance not only as an independent local parish but also as one of the starting points for the expansion of Catholic communities in northern Jeonju. It is a place where the history of an established parish and its relationship with newer neighboring communities can be understood together.
History & origins
Songcheon-dong Parish was established on July 17, 1987. The current diocesan directory gives this as the official foundation date, and the parish’s twenty-fifth anniversary celebration in 2012 likewise identified 1987 as the beginning of the community. The parish became an independent pastoral community as the Songcheon-dong area of northern Jeonju developed.
As the community grew, Songcheon-dong also became the foundation for the creation of new neighboring parishes. According to diocesan records, Solnae Parish was separated from Songcheon-dong in January 1999; the new community later became established under the name Solnae. This is an example of how the growth of Songcheon-dong contributed to the restructuring of parish life in northern Jeonju.
In 2012 the parish marked its twenty-fifth anniversary with a commemorative Mass, a presentation of its history, a photo exhibition, and a handwritten Bible project. The celebration offered an opportunity to look back on more than a generation of parish life. The history of Songcheon-dong thus reflects the formation of a Catholic community alongside the urban growth of northern Jeonju and its later role in giving rise to another parish.
