About this place

Solnae Catholic Church is the church of Solnae Parish in the northern Jeonju district of the Diocese of Jeonju, serving parts of Songcheon-dong and the Eco City area in Deokjin-gu, Jeonju. The current diocesan record names St. Paul Chong Ha-sang as its patron, and the church is the center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and other activities of the Catholic community that has grown in the Songcheon area.

The pastoral environment of Solnae continues to change with the development of nearby new towns. Diocesan records state that the Catholic population in the parish territory grew with the development of Eco City, leading in 2026 to a groundbreaking ceremony for a new church in the Eco area. The present Solnae church is therefore both the center of the established community and a parish base extending its pastoral reach toward newly formed residential areas.

History & origins

Solnae Parish was established on January 21, 1999, after being separated from Songcheon-dong Parish. A 2026 diocesan record also confirms that Solnae was created from Songcheon-dong in January 1999. At first the parish was called “Songcheon 1-dong Parish,” and according to the official diocesan chronology its name was changed to “Solnae Parish” on January 2, 2002.

After the parish took root, continued urban development and the expansion of apartment neighborhoods in the Songcheon area brought growth in the Catholic community. In particular, the construction of Eco City created a new large residential area within the existing Solnae territory, eventually creating the need for an additional pastoral space.

As a result, on April 25, 2026, Bishop Kim Seon-tae presided over the blessing of the construction site and the groundbreaking ceremony for a new church in the Eco area. The process shows Solnae, itself born from Songcheon-dong in 1999, now nurturing another emerging local community, and reflects the way the parish has changed alongside the urban growth of northern Jeonju.
