About this place

Shintaein Catholic Church is a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and serves Catholics across Shintaein-eup and the surrounding areas of Taein-myeon, Gamgok-myeon, Ipyeong-myeon, Jeongu-myeon, and Ongdong-myeon in Jeongeup. According to official diocesan information, its patron is the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the parish is linked with several mission stations across a broad rural territory.

Shintaein’s character is therefore that of both a town parish church and a central parish connecting dispersed rural communities. Through the parish church and its mission stations, Catholics living across the area remain part of a single pastoral community. It has long provided an institutional and spiritual foundation for Catholic life in northern Jeongeup and the surrounding countryside. The parish is best understood not only as one church building, but as the center of a wider pastoral network.

History & origins

The roots of Shintaein Parish lie in Neungdari Parish, established on May 26, 1929. It was founded around Catholic village communities in the rural northern part of Jeongeup, and as local conditions and patterns of transportation changed, the center of pastoral activity later moved.

In May 1935 the parish center was transferred to Taein and continued as Taein Parish. In 1954 it moved again, this time to Shintaein, where the present parish took shape. These moves were more than changes of name: they represent the way an early parish rooted in rural Catholic villages reorganized its pastoral base in response to new population and transportation centers.

The Diocese of Jeonju today retains May 26, 1929—the establishment date of Neungdari Parish—as the foundation date of Shintaein Parish. The parish subsequently maintained links with surrounding mission stations such as Taein and Shingi while serving a broad rural area. Its history is thus best understood not simply as the chronology of one fixed church building, but as the continuity of a Catholic community whose pastoral center moved from Neungdari to Taein and then to Shintaein.
