Sinjeon Mission Station

History & origins

According to records of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju, Sinjeon Mission Station was established in 1898. Catholics in the Imsil area formed a small community in a rural district far from the parish church and continued their faith around the mission station. The surviving building is a low hanok-style structure that retains the atmosphere of an older Korean rural mission chapel.

A diocesan field report notes that the building did not always stand in its present position and was moved from a nearby location. The precise year of relocation is not securely established in the accessible written record, so a specific date cannot be stated with confidence. What is clear is that successive generations maintained and repaired the mission building over a long period.

Sinjeon’s history is therefore defined less by large rebuilding projects or institutional changes than by the endurance of a small rural Catholic community. The continuity from its late nineteenth-century establishment to its present relationship with Imsil Parish illustrates the role mission stations have played in the mountainous parts of the Jeonju Diocese. Oral accounts of the community’s earliest conversions remain valuable local memory, but because their details cannot be independently verified, they are not presented here as established facts.
