Singwang Mission Station belongs to Gochang Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju and preserves traces of a Catholic community formed in Buan-myeon, Gochang-gun. The current diocesan list marks it as 'not in operation,' indicating that regular mission-station activity has ceased.
The mission station was not simply a place set aside for Mass and prayer. It was established in the 1960s amid a project to create farmland and a new settlement in order to help poor local residents. Although regular activity has now ended, the site remains a reminder of how the Catholic community in Gochang developed alongside efforts to build the material foundations of local life.
History & origins
Singwang Mission Station was established in 1965. According to a Diocese of Jeonju bulletin, Fr. Joseph Bae Yeong-geun, a Belgian priest who became the second pastor of Gochang Parish in December 1962, reclaimed land in the Buan-myeon area to create farmland for poor residents and established a mission station in the new Sinchon settlement that developed through that work.
After the early community became established, a new mission building of about twenty pyeong was constructed in February 1980. The building gave the Singwang community a dedicated space in which to continue its Catholic life.
The current diocesan list still places Singwang under Gochang Parish but marks it as 'not in operation.' Its history can therefore be understood as that of a Catholic community formed in connection with local development and assistance to residents, sustained for several decades, and now remaining as an inactive mission station.
