About this place

Shingi Mission Station belongs to Shintaein Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and is a rural Catholic community in Taein-myeon, Jeongeup. Current diocesan records identify it as a mission station under Shintaein Parish. It serves as a local center where Catholics living at a distance from the parish church can gather for prayer and the celebration of Mass.

Its significance lies not only in the survival of an older mission-station building. Jeongeup City’s local cultural records describe Shingi village itself as an unusual Catholic village on the plains, formed through the migration and settlement of several Catholic families. Shingi Mission Station can therefore be understood as a place where the formation of a local community and the transmission of the Catholic faith became closely intertwined, preserving the memory and everyday history of a small rural Catholic community.

History & origins

The Catholic community of Shingi village began to take clearer shape in 1934, when three Catholic households, including those of Gwak Su-yeong, Jeong Sang-ok, and Jeong Jang-won, moved into the area. More Catholic families followed, and around the time of the Korean War Catholic refugees also settled there, enlarging the community. Jeongeup City records describe this process as the formation of a Catholic village in an unusual plains setting.

A dedicated mission-station building was provided after the community had grown. Park Sang-gyu donated the site, and with support from the parish and the labor of local Catholics, construction was completed on April 2, 1958. Bishop Kim Hyeon-bae of Jeonju blessed the building. It originally had a thatched roof, which was replaced with tiles in 1961, giving the chapel the form by which the rural mission station became known.

Shingi subsequently continued its Catholic life as a mission station of Shintaein Parish. The story of Catholics moving into the area, forming a village, and establishing their own place of prayer illustrates one pattern of rural Catholic settlement in the Jeonbuk region. Because a Catholic directory gives an earlier establishment year that does not align with the detailed local-history chronology, this account is limited to the community formation in the 1930s and the 1958 construction that are specifically supported by Jeongeup City and diocesan records.
