Singunri Mission Station

History & origins

The roots of Singeun-ri Mission Station reach back to before the 1920s. A diocesan pilgrimage resource explains that Catholics from several regions gathered here, formed a pottery-making settlement, and practiced their faith. The record that pottery fragments can still be found around the mission station also shows how closely the community's livelihood was connected with pottery production.

The Korean Catholic directory records 1920 as the establishment year of Singeun-ri Mission Station, and diocesan materials show that it continued thereafter as a community under Yeosan Parish. A diocesan record also notes that, with help from Catholics in neighboring mission stations, a Legion of Mary praesidium was founded at Singeun-ri in 1989, showing that organized Catholic activity continued in the community into the late twentieth century.

Today Singeun-ri remains listed as a mission station under Yeosan Parish. Beginning as a pottery-making Catholic settlement where livelihood and faith were closely intertwined, it has continued as one point in the network of mission communities connected with Yeosan.
