Shindeung Mission Station belongs to Hwangdeung Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and has long served as a focal point for a rural Catholic community in Hamra-myeon, Iksan. Current diocesan records identify it as a mission station under Hwangdeung Parish. It provides a place where Catholics who live some distance from the parish church can pray together, celebrate Mass, and sustain community life.
The diocesan account of Shindeung preserves the everyday history of an older rural mission station. A small community worked together to secure and maintain its place of worship, while features such as the bell tower and the traditional mission-station space became markers of local Catholic memory. Its significance today lies less in size than in continuity: it embodies both the history and the living presence of a rural Catholic community linked to Hwangdeung Parish.
History & origins
The beginnings of Shindeung Mission Station can be traced to Catholics gathering for Mass in the home of Yi Seung-hun (Joseph), who operated a pottery kiln. According to the Diocese of Jeonju, he served as the first mission-station president and played an important role in establishing the community. In 1941, local Catholics cleared and cultivated rocky land with their own labor to secure a site and gradually built a space for their shared faith.
The bell tower bears the date August 15, 1945. Because it coincides with Korea’s liberation, the inscription remains a symbolic trace of a Catholic community that endured through a turbulent period of local history. As the mission station continued to be used over the decades, its building and facilities required repeated care and repair.
In 2013 the mission station was renovated and blessed on May 24, renewing the long-used space. Its liturgical and communal life then continued in connection with Hwangdeung Parish. The path from a small gathering in a private home, through the community’s own labor to establish a site, and onward through war and social change provides a concrete example of the transmission of Catholic faith in rural Iksan.
