About this place

Sigi-dong Parish is one of the long-established parishes of the Diocese of Jeonju in Jeongeup. It serves Sigi-dong, Sang-dong, Naejang-dong, Geumbung-dong, Jangmyeong-dong, Guryong-dong, the Ipam-myeon area, and nearby districts. Its patron is Our Lady, Queen of the Rosary, and it serves as a central parish linked with local mission stations including Sinseong and Deungcheon.

The parish has carried forward the formation and movement of the Catholic community in the Jeongeup area over a long period. Even before the present name was adopted, the community had a lineage extending through Sinseong-ri and Jeongeup, making Sigi-dong an important place that connects today's parish community with the history of the area's early Catholics.

History & origins

Catholic faith in the Jeongeup area can be traced to before the 1880s. In 1893, Fr. M. Jozeau, the second pastor of Geumgu Baejae Parish, established Sinseong-ri Mission Station, which later passed under the pastoral care of Mokpo Sanjeong-dong Parish and Ujeok-dong Parish. In 1903, Fr. Augustine Kim Seung-yeon purchased land and a thatched house in Sinseong-ri and established Sinseong-ri Parish, creating the basis for an independent parish community.

In 1931, the church moved to Myeongdeok-dong in Jeongeup and was renamed Jeongeup Parish. After the Korean War, it endured a difficult period of about three years as a mission station under Sintaein Parish, but the community was reorganized after Fr. Augustine Kim Yeong-il arrived in 1954. In 1957, the present church and rectory were built, and the new church was dedicated on December 16.

During the 1980s, changes in the Catholic population of Jeongeup led to another parish division. In January 1985, the new second Jeongeup church was dedicated and Yeonji-dong Parish was separated. At that point, the existing Jeongeup Parish was renamed Sigi-dong Parish, establishing the name used today.

The hanok-style rectory of the former Sinseong-ri Mission Station, the starting point of the parish's history, was designated as a Jeollabuk-do cultural heritage resource in 2002. In 2003, Sigi-dong Parish celebrated a thanksgiving Mass for the centenary of its establishment. Its history traces the movement and growth of the Catholic community in Jeongeup from Sinseong-ri Mission Station to Jeongeup Parish and finally to today's Sigi-dong Parish.
