About this place
Seosindong Catholic Church is an urban parish church in District 2 of the Diocese of Jeonju, serving a Catholic community centered on Seosindong in Wansan-gu, Jeonju. The diocese’s current information identifies the parish patronal title as Mother of the Savior and states that its territory covers Seosindong except for the Seosin 1 district. In this large residential area, the parish serves as a center connecting liturgy, sacramental life, catechesis, and community activities for local Catholics.
Although the parish was originally created in response to urban development and population growth, its present role is more important here than the detailed chronology. It brings together Catholics from apartment complexes and older residential neighborhoods into one parish community and provides a stable foundation for Catholic life in western central Jeonju. Its dedication to the Mother of the Savior is also a defining element of its liturgical identity.
History & origins
As development of the Seosindong area accelerated in the late 1980s, the Diocese of Jeonju began preparing a new parish for the expected increase in residents and Catholics. On January 6, 1988, the diocese purchased about 695 pyeong of land at the present site. The following day, nearby buildings were rented and adapted as a temporary church, rectory, and meeting rooms. The new parish was separated from Supjeongi Parish and established in January 1988.
The exact establishment date differs by two days between sources. The current Diocese of Jeonju information gives January 21, 1988, while the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records January 19. This account therefore uses only the common point that the parish was established in January 1988. Beginning in temporary facilities, the parish prepared for a permanent church as the community grew. Construction started on September 10, 1989, and a church with one basement level and three stories above ground was completed and dedicated on September 8, 1990.
The parish later expanded its space for education and community gatherings. In April 1997 it acquired a nearby building for use as an education center and rectory, supplementing the facilities needed by a growing urban parish. The development of Seosindong Parish shows how residential expansion in Jeonju led to a new parish and how a community that began in temporary quarters rapidly acquired a permanent church and spaces for formation and pastoral life.
