About this place
Seonindong Mission Station is a mission station of Jinan Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju, serving as a small liturgical gathering place for Catholics around Seonin-gil in Jinan-eup. The current mission-station list of the Diocese of Jeonju places Seonindong under Jinan Parish, and the mission station continues to preserve one of the long-standing Catholic village traditions of the Jinan area.
Its significance lies in the way Catholics have sustained a community even in a rural area distant from the parish church. The mission-station building has been repaired and adapted several times to changing local circumstances, while the faithful continued their prayer and liturgical life around it. More than impressive facilities, the enduring relationships among local Catholics and the memory of their faith define Seonindong, making it a useful place for understanding the local roots of Catholicism in Jinan.
History & origins
The history of Seonindong Mission Station goes back to 1901. Diocesan records state that Fr. Stephen Kim Yang-hong of Eoeundong Parish first visited the area that year and that Seonindong Mission Station was established in the same year. The first mission-station building was thatched; it was later replaced by a wooden structure with a sheet-metal roof.
A statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was erected on December 19, 1988. In the early 1990s, the aging structure was replaced with prefabricated panels and a steel-sheet roof, and in 2009 a confessional and kitchen were added. A 2025 diocesan pilgrimage resource confirms the same sequence from thatched structure to sheet-metal roof and prefabricated building, and again records Seonindong as a mission station visited by Fr. Kim Yang-hong in 1901.
These changes show how the mission station survived shifts in rural life and population by repeatedly adapting its physical space to local needs. Although the present building is the result of several renovations, it remains historically meaningful as a place that connects today’s community with the Catholic community formed here at the beginning of the twentieth century.
