About this place

Seongsu Mission Station belongs to Imsil Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju and is the liturgical space used by the Catholic community of Seongsu-myeon, Imsil-gun. A diocesan feature on Seongsu shows the mission station serving Catholics who live in the rural area near Seongsusan, at a distance from the parish church.

Its distinctive character lies in the way the community has rebuilt its sacred space across generations despite war, relocation, and changes in rural society. The present one-story church is more than a place for worship: it connects the memory of earlier Catholic villages with the local faithful of today. Though small, it is an important point within the broad pastoral territory of Imsil Parish where Catholics of Seongsu-myeon can pray together and remain linked to the wider Church community.

History & origins

The roots of Seongsu Mission Station lie in Saeti Mission Station, established in 1900. Saeti was destroyed during the Korean War, and after the war its Catholics moved to the site of present-day Seongsu. In the early period, before there was a separate mission-station building, prayers were held in the homes of local Catholics.

After Fr. Benedict Park Seong-un arrived at Imsil Parish in April 1961, a hall was built for Seongsu Mission Station. The first structure made by the relocated Catholics was a thatched building using timber cut from the mountains and earth. When it deteriorated, the community demolished it and joined together to build a second structure with a slate roof. A Sunday school began in 1985, and the interior was repaired at the end of 1996.

When the second building also aged, a new construction project began in 2008 under Fr. Leo Park Jong-chung. The faithful added funds raised by selling goods at a local festival and built the present third mission-station building, which was blessed on November 3 of that year. The architectural history of Seongsu thus records how a community destroyed by war gathered again and repeatedly restored its own sacred space through shared effort.
