About this place
The Jeonju branch of the Daughters of St. Paul is a local community of the congregation serving within the Diocese of Jeonju. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea lists the branch in Jungnosong-dong, Wansan-gu, Jeonju, and gives the official English name as “Daughters of St. Paul.”
The Daughters of St. Paul place at the center of their spirituality the call to live and proclaim Christ the Master, “the Way, the Truth, and the Life,” following the missionary spirit of St. Paul and devotion to Mary, Queen of Apostles. A defining feature of their apostolate is the use of the means of social communication of each age—publishing, bookstores, education, and digital content—to proclaim the Gospel. The Jeonju branch carries this charism within the Diocese of Jeonju, encountering the local Church through faith content and the ministry of evangelization.
History & origins
The Daughters of St. Paul began in Alba, Italy, on June 15, 1915, and entered Korea through the Archdiocese of Seoul on December 13, 1960. The following year they opened their first St. Paul bookstore in Chungmuro and began publishing and home-visit evangelization, establishing their communications apostolate in Korea.
The congregation’s official chronology explicitly records “entry into the Diocese of Jeonju” in 1969. This is direct evidence that the Pauline apostolate took root in the Jeonju area during the early period of the congregation’s Korean mission. In the following decades, the Korean province expanded beyond print into biblical apostolate, audiovisual media, online bookstores, and digital content as new forms of communication emerged.
Today the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea continues to list the Jeonju branch as a distinct local community. Although the publicly available sources do not provide every relocation of the branch itself, the official record of entry into the Diocese of Jeonju in 1969 and the continuing present branch together show more than half a century of missionary presence in the Jeonju area.
