About this place
Seoil Catholic Church is an urban parish church in District 4 of the Diocese of Jeonju, serving apartment complexes and residential neighborhoods around Gosapyeong-ro in Wansan-gu, Jeonju. The diocese’s current information identifies St. Paul Chong Hasang as its patron. Within this densely populated residential area, the parish serves as a local center linking Mass and sacramental life with catechesis, small Christian communities, and devotional activities.
Seoil Parish was formed as a new community amid the growth of neighboring Seosindong Parish and continuing residential development. Its present church was built after several years of preparation following the parish’s establishment and has provided Catholics in the northern Seosindong living area with a nearby and stable center for their faith. The dedication to St. Paul Chong Hasang, one of the Korean martyrs, gives the parish a distinctive spiritual identity and brings the memory of Korean martyrdom into the liturgical life of an urban community.
History & origins
Seoil Parish was established on September 9, 2001, by separation from Seosindong Parish. Residential development and growth in the Catholic population had expanded the pastoral responsibilities of the older parish, creating a need for a new parish to serve the neighboring residential area. The new community began as an independent parish without a completed permanent church, and preparations and fundraising for a church building continued after its establishment.
Ground was broken for the new church on October 30, 2004. According to the Diocese of Jeonju, the complex was built on a 321-pyeong site with a total floor area of 385 pyeong and consisted of one basement level, three stories above ground, and an annex. It included a main church, a smaller chapel, parish offices, catechetical rooms, meeting rooms, and a rectory, bringing liturgical, educational, and administrative functions together in one parish complex.
The completed church was consecrated on May 6, 2006, in a Mass presided over by Bishop Vincent Lee Byung-ho. Thus, within about five years of the parish’s foundation, the community had completed a permanent church of its own. The process shows how a new parish was created in a rapidly growing urban residential area and how parishioners gradually established the physical setting required for worship and formation. The church then became the stable center of Catholic life for the Gosapyeong-ro area.
