About this place
Sangsamnye Catholic Church is a parish church in District 4 of the Diocese of Jeonju. Its territory includes parts of Samnye-eup in Wanju County and parts of Wanggung-myeon in Iksan. The diocese’s current information identifies the 103 Korean Martyr Saints as its patrons, and the parish also has pastoral responsibility for Iksan Mission Station. Its distinctive regional role lies in joining villages and residential communities across the administrative boundary between Wanju and Iksan into one Catholic community.
The dedication to the 103 Korean Martyr Saints gives the parish a clear spiritual identity. Within a liturgical tradition that remembers the witness of the Korean martyrs, Sangsamnye Catholic Church serves as a center for sacramental life, catechesis, and community gatherings. The presence of a mission station within its jurisdiction also shows the parish’s role in linking the main parish church with rural and outlying Catholic communities.
History & origins
Sangsamnye Parish was established on February 16, 1992. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that the new parish was formed by separating territory from Samnye and Gosan parishes. At the time, it served parts of Samnye-eup as well as Wanggung-myeon and Chunpo-myeon in Iksan and had Iksan Mission Station under its jurisdiction. The history of Samnye Parish likewise records that when Sangsamnye was separated on the same date, Iksan Mission Station and the parish records of 1,028 Catholics were transferred to the new parish.
The division reflected the expansion of the Catholic population and a reorganization of pastoral territory in the Samnye–Iksan area. Samnye Parish had previously served a wide region and several Catholic communities; the creation of Sangsamnye Parish allowed Catholics in northern Samnye and around Wanggung in Iksan to organize their faith life around a nearer parish center. Although detailed boundaries have changed with administrative and urban development, the parish has retained its role of connecting communities along the Wanju–Iksan border, including Iksan Mission Station.
On October 30, 2022, a Mass marking the parish’s thirtieth anniversary was celebrated with Bishop John Baptist Kim Seon-tae presiding. The anniversary showed that the 1992 separation had developed into a stable parish community over three decades. The history of Sangsamnye Catholic Church thus records how a new parish emerged from the older Catholic foundation of the Samnye area and became a pastoral center for communities across the regional boundary.
