About this place

Sanggwan Catholic Church is a parish church in District 3 of the Diocese of Jeonju. Its territory includes a number of villages in Sanggwan-myeon, Wanju County, as well as part of Saekjang-dong in Jeonju. The diocese’s current information gives its patronal title as the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen. Because the parish connects rural villages with an area on the edge of Jeonju, it serves as a common center of liturgy and sacramental life for Catholics from different local settings.

Catholic faith in the Sanggwan area predates the establishment of the parish and rests on a much older history of Catholic villages and mission stations. The present parish church continues that rural Catholic tradition within the parish structure and gathers several local communities into a single pastoral unit. Together with its Marian patronal tradition, the memory of the mission-station period is an important background for understanding the identity of Sanggwan Parish today.

History & origins

Catholic faith in Sanggwan-myeon can be traced back to the period after the Byeongin Persecution. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that the family of Kang Un-jip, who had fled persecution, settled in Eodu-ri and spread the faith there. By around 1880, Eodu-ri Mission Station had formed and missionaries were administering the sacraments. Other mission stations later appeared in nearby villages such as Banwol and Machi, extending the Catholic community across the Sanggwan area.

On March 20, 1952, Jeondong Parish purchased land and a house at the site of the present church and consolidated nearby mission communities, giving Sanggwan Mission Station a more stable base. As the community grew, construction of a chapel began in March 1959, and a 74-pyeong mission church was completed and dedicated on August 22 of that year. At the end of 1967, jurisdiction was transferred to Seohakdong Parish, marking the next stage toward the establishment of an independent parish.

The exact date of parish elevation differs between sources. The current Diocese of Jeonju directory gives December 7, 1976, while the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records December 15. This account therefore uses only the common point that Sanggwan became a parish in December 1976. The new parish reorganized the older rural mission communities within a parish structure and came to serve Sanggwan-myeon and part of Saekjang-dong. Its history is a clear example of a Catholic village formed after persecution developing through a mission station into a parish.
