About this place
Palma Church is a parish of the Diocese of Jeonju in Gunsan, a community that began in 1969 when it was separated from Dunyul-dong Parish. Current diocesan information identifies St. Joseph as its patron. As central Gunsan changed, the parish changed location and name, and several later parishes—including Oryong-dong, Okbong, and Jochon-dong—were separated from it. In this sense Palma is one of the mother parishes that reflects the growth and subdivision of the Catholic Church in Gunsan.
The present name 'Palma' is connected with an old local place name where the parish settled. It first began as Jung-dong Parish, but after moving to a newly built church it adopted the name Palma Parish, forming the identity it retains today. Palma Church therefore serves the faith life of its local parish while also preserving an important link in the history of parish expansion and development in Gunsan.
History & origins
Palma Parish began in April 1969 when it was separated from Dunyul-dong Parish and established in Jung-dong, Gunsan, under the name 'Jung-dong Parish.' Diocesan sources agree on April 1969 but differ on the exact day: the current parish page gives April 1, while a fiftieth-anniversary article gives April 18. This history therefore states only the year and month, on which the sources agree.
According to a diocesan fortieth-anniversary account, the parish moved to its present area in 1976 and began construction of a new church. The following year, the new church was dedicated under Bishop Kim Jae-deok and the parish name was changed to 'Palma Parish.' Jochon-dong Parish was separated from Palma in 1988, while other diocesan material notes that Oryong-dong and Okbong Parishes were also later established from Palma. This shows Palma's role as a center of parish expansion in Gunsan.
In 2019, the parish celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving for the fiftieth anniversary of its establishment and looked back on half a century of community history. Today's Palma Church emerged through a sequence that began with Jung-dong Parish, continued through relocation and a new name, and later included the creation of daughter parishes. Although the exact day of the 1969 establishment differs between diocesan records, the broader chronology—separation in April 1969, later relocation and renaming, and subsequent parish divisions—is consistently supported.
