About this place

Palbong Catholic Church is a parish in District 6 of the Diocese of Jeonju. Its pastoral territory includes Palbong-dong, Eungi-dong, Deokgi-dong, Seogwang-dong, Seogam-dong, and parts of Chunpo-myeon in Iksan. Its patronal dedication is the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the parish serves as the local center where Catholics continue their sacramental and liturgical life.

A distinctive feature of Palbong is that it began within the Diocese of Jeonju’s late-1990s effort to place missionary outreach at the forefront of parish ministry and establish new Catholic communities. The church is therefore best understood not only as one parish in Iksan, but also as a fruit of the diocese’s missionary-parish policy for forming communities in developing pastoral areas.

History & origins

On August 18, 1997, the Diocese of Jeonju introduced a system of “missionary parishes,” based on the conviction that mission belongs to the essence of the Church. The diocesan history records Palbong in Iksan, together with Osu, Mangyeong, and Julpo, among the communities newly established under this policy. The aim was not simply to divide existing parishes, but to make evangelization and the formation of new communities an explicit purpose of parish establishment.

Current diocesan parish records give August 30, 1997 as the establishment date of Palbong Parish. The sources therefore show a sequence in which the missionary-parish system was introduced at diocesan level and Palbong became a formally established parish later that same month. The parish has since continued to serve several eastern districts of Iksan and part of Chunpo-myeon.

The available official sources do not provide a detailed chronology of the earliest church construction, so no unsupported dates of construction or relocation are added here. Palbong’s historical significance lies in the direct continuity between the Diocese of Jeonju’s 1997 missionary-parish initiative and the local parish community that exists today.
