About this place
Palbok-dong Church is a parish of the Diocese of Jeonju serving the Palbok-dong area of Jeonju. It was established on August 29, 2004, and its patron is St. Joseph the Worker. Founded in a district shaped by an industrial working environment, the parish has served as a center for the liturgical and communal life of local Catholics. Its name directly uses the local name Palbok-dong, clearly linking the parish with the community it serves.
Diocesan sources show that the names 'Palbok Church' and 'Palbok-dong Church' were once used side by side, but in 2018 the community standardized the name as 'Palbok-dong Church.' A long-planned project for a new church later came to fruition, and the new church was consecrated in 2025. The parish now continues the same community founded in 2004 while carrying out its local pastoral role in the new church building.
History & origins
Palbok-dong Parish was established on August 29, 2004. The Diocese of Jeonju names St. Joseph the Worker as the parish patron, and since its establishment the Catholics of Palbok-dong have continued their life of faith within an independent parish structure. As the community developed, improving the church environment and securing a new church building remained a long-term concern.
The parish name also went through a process of clarification. According to a diocesan report, 'Palbok Church' and 'Palbok-dong Church' had been used interchangeably until the official name was standardized as 'Palbok-dong Church' in 2018 in order to express more clearly the parish's local identity and communal unity. Correcting the name became an occasion for the community to reaffirm its identity as a parish serving the surrounding area.
The construction of a new church later became another major turning point. The Diocese of Jeonju records that the new church was consecrated on November 8, 2025, in a ceremony presided over by Bishop John Kim Son-tae. Completion of the long-awaited project gave the parish a new worship space. Because the diocese has updated the parish's official address following the move to the new church, and that address differs from the older address in the package, this historical text does not include a changeable street address.
