About this place

Osu Catholic Church is a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju serving Osu-myeon, Samgye-myeon, and Jisa-myeon in Imsil County, as well as Deokgwa-myeon in Namwon and Sanseo-myeon in Jangsu County. Current diocesan information identifies St. John the Baptist as the parish patron. One of the parish's defining features is that Catholics scattered across several counties and rural districts are joined in a single parish community for the liturgy and the sacraments.

Osu Catholic Church is therefore not simply a church for one town center, but a pastoral hub connecting rural Catholic communities across the boundaries of Imsil, Namwon, and Jangsu. Through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life, it brings together Catholics living across a wide area. Current personnel and detailed Mass schedules are excluded in favor of the more stable information of affiliation, territory, patron, and pastoral role.

History & origins

Osu Catholic Church began in August 1997 when it was separated from Imsil Parish and established as a mission parish. The Diocese of Jeonju's record for the 20th anniversary states that pastoral ministry began with 198 Catholics, while the current diocesan parish page gives August 29, 1997 as the official foundation date.

Although it began as a small newly independent parish, it later became a regional parish serving not only Osu-myeon but also Samgye-myeon and Jisa-myeon in Imsil County, Deokgwa-myeon in Namwon, and Sanseo-myeon in Jangsu County. In August 2017, the community celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving for the 20th anniversary and looked back on the years since its transition from a mission station to a parish, acknowledging the work of its priests and parishioners.

The history of Osu Parish can thus be understood as the growth of a small rural Catholic community into an independent parish and a pastoral center serving Catholics across administrative boundaries. Architectural details or unverified chronological claims not supported by the public sources are not included.
