About this place
Okbong Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of Okbong Parish in District 5 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju. It serves Catholics in the Okseo-myeon area of Gunsan and part of Okgu-eup, providing a place for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The diocesan directory identifies the parish patron as St. Joseph Cho Yun-ho, a Korean martyr saint, and lists several villages of Okseo-myeon and part of Okgu-eup within its territory. A community of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary of Mirinae is also associated with the parish.
Unlike an inner-city parish, Okbong Parish gathers Catholics across a more dispersed rural and outlying area of Gunsan. Its dedication to a Korean martyr saint also connects ordinary parish worship and faith life with the Diocese of Jeonju's strong memory of the Korean martyrs. Rather than changeable details such as schedules or current personnel, this parish identity and its role in linking the local Catholic community are the most important features for understanding the place.
History & origins
The Catholic community at Okbong did not begin as an independent parish. According to the Digital Gunsan Cultural Encyclopedia and the Diocese of Jeonju's 25th-anniversary account, it first developed as a mission station under Gunsan Parish, now Dunyul-dong Parish, and from 1961 continued under Wolmyeong-dong Parish. As the Catholic community grew in the early 1980s, preparations began for an independent parish and a permanent church building.
In 1982 the faithful pooled their resources to acquire a church site, and the following year work was carried out to fill and prepare the land. In September 1984 Okbong became an independent parish, marking its transition from mission station to parish. Construction then proceeded, and the new church was blessed in 1985. Records note that the project was sustained not only by parishioners' fundraising and labor but also by various forms of assistance from within and outside the local Church.
Okbong subsequently took root as a parish serving the western outskirts of Gunsan and continued through later changes in parish boundaries and the creation of neighboring parishes. The exact day of its establishment is recorded differently in the current diocesan directory and in the local cultural record, so this account uses only the point on which they agree: the parish was established in September 1984. The central theme of Okbong's history is the growth of a small mission community into an independent parish with its own church through the sustained efforts of local Catholics.
